Nobel Prize Winner Dr. Ray Davis' Deep Undeground Laboratory Revived for New Scientific Use

In 2002, Dr. Davis was recognized with a Nobel Prize for Physics. He had set the world of astrophysics on its ear.

Back in 1965, Dr. Ray Davis installed a neutrino (subatomic particle) detector in South Dakota's famous Homestake mine. After decades, his experiment led to the discovery that the neutrinos had to have at least a wisp of mass. But this wisp of mass required that we rewrite of the then standard model of how the universe works and opened the door to new possibilities.

Dr. Davis has made Homestake famous among astrophysicists and particle physicists. Now scientists and engineers are reopening Homestake in South Dakota as an underground laboratory.

To read the full story, check out the article, "Welcome to Deep Sience" at the Sanford Underground Laboratory at the Homestake Mine website.

South Dakota is very proud to have this new development for renewed and continued use of this deep mine shaft which was previously used to mine Black Hills gold.
